The Joggins Fossil Cliffs as a Muse

The Joggins Fossil Cliffs have long been used as a source of inspiration for local artists and poets but word is spreading and we are awestruck by the work we are audience to, which is coming from further afield and created by people inspired by their visit and the images left imprinted on their minds.

Here are a selection of artists and poets who have created works on the cliffs:

 

Mark Cornelis Boon

Mark Boon appears alongside Don Reid at World Heritage Inscription event 08Mark was born in the Netherlands and has lived in Joggins for many years, creating spectacular landscape paintings inspired by the cliffs and the Bay of Fundy, which he described in a recent TV interview as a "mystical goddess".

Carol Whitcombe CSPWC

Carol Whitcombe Self-Portrait Carol Whitcombe was born and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she enjoyed an extensive career in the Commercial/ Graphic Art field for thirty two years. She has won many awards for her realistic watercolours, has had her work in galleries in Winnipeg, Toronto, Cuba and the USA, and for a number of years taught watercolour painting in Winnipeg and at the International Peace Gardens.

Deanne Fitzpatrick

Deanne is one of the best-known names liked with rug hooking.

Speaking of hooking rugs Deanne says " I learned that I could tell stories, and express myself through rug hooking. This is what really got me involved with it. Each time I make a rug I create a new design. In many of my pieces I tell stories or express ideas about the world."

Dr. Darryl Whetter, Dalhousie University

Dr. Whetter applied for funding through the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada to enable the construction of a poetry project, which was inspired by the fossil cliffs of Joggins.
